Florida Board Announces a Renewal Fee Holiday
From (http://www.fbpe.org/ ) - At the December 5, 2007 meeting in Tallahassee, out-going Board Chairman Henn Rebane announced a ‘FEE HOLIDAY” for the 2009 renewal cycle. The waived renewal fee is for the 2009 renewal cycle for all professional engineers for the next biennium. A statutorily required fee of $5.00 for unlicensed activity will not apply to the Fee Holiday or the renewal of any Certificate of Authorization. The fee holiday will reduce the trust fund balance for FBPE in conjunction with DBPR’s policy to provide protection to the public in the most cost efficient way.The eight hours of Continuing Education is still required to renew all Florida PE licenses.

Reporting of Legal Actions

Effective January 1, 2008, the Reporting of Legal Action Program becomes effective in the State of California.  Under this program, "all professional engineers and land surveyors will be required to report criminal convictions; civil action judgments, settlements, and arbitration awards; and administrative actions to the Board within 90 days of their occurrence or from when the licensee has knowledge of the action."

More information is availbale here: http://www.dca.ca.gov/pels/reporting_program.htm

California Building Code Amendments – A No Show!

Those who looked forward to the presentations on California Building Code amendments were in for a great disappointment: the presentations were cancelled.  These presentations were scheduled as part of an entire session titled “California Building Code Amendments” slated for Saturday, May 19, 2007 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. during Structures Congress 2007 in Long Beach, California.  Both presentations were replaced with presentations on unrelated subjects.  The conference proceedings do not provide any relief here as they did not contain any information on the subject.

With the new IBC-based California Building Code scheduled to become effective July 2007, it is difficult to justify missing the opportunity to present the amendments at the Structures Congress.  It is more difficult to justify a no show especially when some congress registrants could have attended, possibly because of such a session.

Structural Engineering Licensure or Certification: the Great Debate

At Structures Congress 2007 in Long Beach, there were two interesting presentations given under the Business Practices track:

  • Status of Structural Engineering Practice Acts Nationally, by Sam Rihani of Fairfax, VA, and
  • The Structural Engineering Certification Program by Ronald O. Hamburger of San Francisco, CA.

Below are some of the highlights from each of the presentations:
